Diet is key to healthy teeth - it’s not so much what you eat but when you eat it that counts.
Sugary and acidic foods can damage our teeth, - we all know that, but it’s not just what we eat, but when we eat it, that can do the damage.
Every time we eat, even just a little sugar, the bacteria in the dental plaque produce acid and this is what causes tooth decay. Eating three meals a day will not usually damage teeth, but snacking throughout the day on foods and sweetened drinks will quickly cause dental problems.
Our saliva is what neutralizes and washes away the acid and it takes about an hour for this to happen. Brushing away all the plaque effectively will reduce the acid-producing bacteria and therefore the probability of decay.
